Veneers Smile Design: What a Preview Can and Cannot Promise

Veneers Smile Design: What a Preview Can and Cannot Promise

A veneers smile design is the step where your result is decided, and it happens before a single tooth is touched.

Most patients ask about price and material first. The design is what actually makes two identical-sounding quotes produce very different smiles.

This article explains what the design stage involves, what a preview can honestly predict, and what it cannot.

A note from Dr. Kim — Many people who land on this page share one quiet worry: what if I damage healthy teeth for nothing? It is the first question I ask myself with every patient.

Blanche began with that question: why harm a natural tooth worth more than any restoration? That is why our signature Blanche no-prep veneers follow one rule — minimal intervention, maximum beauty.

A veneers smile design is not a separate treatment

Clinics often list it as if it were an add-on. It is not a procedure you buy on its own.

It is the planning stage of veneer treatment. Photographs, measurements, a digital design and a physical mock-up all belong to it.

Think of an architect’s rendering. It can show you proportion, scale and how rooms relate to each other.

What it cannot show you is how the light falls at six in the evening. A design works the same way: strong on shape and proportion, weaker on the things only real materials reveal.

Knowing which is which protects you from disappointment later.

The four stages of a veneers smile design

Veneers Smile Design: What a Preview Can and Cannot Promise

1. Photographs and video

The first step is a set of standard photographs. Lips at rest, a full smile, a close-up of the teeth, and the face from the side.

A short video of you speaking is often added. Teeth that look fine in a still photo can look too long the moment you say certain sounds.

2. Measurements

Next come the numbers. The width and length of the central incisors, the height of the gum line on each tooth, and the amount of tooth visible when the lips are relaxed.

These numbers are the reason a design is repeatable. Without them, a “design” is just an artistic impression.

3. The digital design

Your photographs and a scan of your teeth are combined on screen. The new shapes are drawn over your own face, not over a stock smile.

This is where proportion is decided. It is also where the plan meets reality, because the design has to fit the bite you already have.

4. The mock-up

The digital design is then converted into something you can see in your own mouth. A thin temporary material is placed over the teeth without cutting them.

You can smile, speak and take photographs with it. For most patients this is the moment the plan stops being abstract.

What a veneers smile design can and cannot predict

ElementHow well a design predicts itWhy
Length and width of teethVery reliableMeasured directly and reproduced in the laboratory
Overall proportion and symmetryVery reliableDecided on screen before anything is made
Speech and lip comfortReliable with a mock-upOnly tested by speaking with the shapes in place
Final colourApproximateThe shade of your own tooth shows through thin ceramic
Gum line after healingApproximateGum tissue settles over the following weeks
Surface texture and light playNot predicted on screenCreated by hand in the ceramic itself

The pattern in that table matters. Anything about shape can be planned. Anything about light needs real material.

This is why an on-screen image that looks perfect is not a promise. A mock-up in your mouth is a much stronger one.

Five things to ask about your veneers smile design

Patients often ask us what separates a careful plan from a sales pitch. In practice, five questions do most of the work.

First, were your own photographs used, or a template? A design drawn over someone else’s smile tells you very little.

Second, were measurements taken, or only an impression of what looks nice? Ask which numbers were used.

Third, will you see a mock-up before anything is prepared? This is the single most useful checkpoint in the whole process.

Fourth, how much tooth structure does the design require? A design that is beautiful but demands heavy reduction is a trade-off, not a free gain.

Fifth, what happens if you want a change after the mock-up? A plan that cannot be adjusted is not really a plan.

If a quote arrives before any of these steps, the number is describing a product, not your case.

Not sure where your case fits? Send two photos — front and smiling — on WhatsApp. We will tell you what is possible before you book any flight.

Planning a veneers smile design for a treatment trip

Travelling patients have one extra constraint: the design cannot start on the day you land.

We ask for photographs in advance. That lets us discuss proportion, length and shade range before you book a flight.

At Blanche Dental Clinic the ceramics are made in our own in-house laboratory. The technician who builds the surface texture works in the same building as the dentist who designed it.

That shortens the loop between a design change and a finished tooth. It also means adjustments after the mock-up do not cost you another trip.

The bonding system matters here too. We use the Ivoclar adhesive system, which sits at the highest price tier, because it is biocompatible and holds its colour over time.

Colour stability is part of the design, not an afterthought. A cement that discolours will change the result you approved.

One-day veneers are priced higher than the standard route. Diagnosis, design, fabrication and adjustment are compressed into a single day, with the dentist and the in-house laboratory team working on your case together.

For the full one-day programme — technology, pricing and booking — see our One-Day Veneers page.

Our pricing is the same for Korean and international patients. The clinic is in Nonhyeon, Gangnam, about an hour from Incheon Airport by airport bus or taxi.

If you want to know what your own case allows, a photo consultation is the fastest starting point.

For how the shapes themselves are judged, see natural looking veneers. For colour language, see our veneers shade guide, and for the temporary stage, temporary veneers.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is a smile design worth paying for separately?

It should not be a separate purchase. Design is part of planning veneer treatment, so ask what is included in the quoted fee rather than buying a design on its own.

Q. How close is the final result to the digital image?

Shape and proportion usually match closely, because both come from the same measurements. Colour and surface character are judged on the mock-up and in the finished ceramic, not on screen.

Q. Can I change my mind after seeing the mock-up?

Yes, and that is what the mock-up is for. Length, width and edge shape can all be adjusted before anything permanent is made.

Side effects and individual variation

Veneer treatment can involve temporary sensitivity or an unfamiliar feeling when biting, and results vary depending on the condition of each tooth. Please decide on treatment after an examination and consultation.

I am a dentist trained at Seoul National University, and I have spent ten years working mainly with veneers. The part of the process I care most about is the one that happens before anything is irreversible.

If you would like to see your own case designed before committing to it, we can start from photographs.

What happens at your first consultation

1. We listen first — what bothers you and what you hope for. 2. We walk you through your scan results and every option.

3. You get itemized costs and timing, and you can decide later, even after you fly home. At Blanche, we explain everything at least four times, by principle.

Consultation — Blanche Dental Clinic is located between Nonhyeon and Sinnonhyeon stations in Gangnam, Seoul. You can reach us on WhatsApp for a photo consultation, and our pricing page lists treatment fees in advance.
